How can I live off of nature peacefully in North Americas' Mountain Forests? (New to the Appalachian Trail)

My husband and I want to make the A.T. for the first time. We are also planning to make the hike with our 20lb. Rat Terrier, Maui. We have found all of the supplies that we will need to take with us and know where we are not welcome with our four-legged son but would really like to have some advice from some experienced Thru-Hikers. How can we hike this trail using the least amount of travel money and focus more on nauture? How can I live off of nature peacefully in North Americas' Mountain Forests? (New to the Appalachian Trail)
It can be done on little or no money other than food. There have been too many people hiking the AT to be able to foriage off the land. Most guidbook say to count on about a dollar a mile apiece to do the trail but it can be done on about 1/2. Try to contact Warren Doyle, he is a professor at Lees-Macrae College and has done about 15 thru hikes and is king of frugalness on the trail.

Just for the information, the dog is not allowed anywhere in the Smokies or at Baxter State Park (Katadin) (heavy fines). Either you have to board him or skip that part.

With that having been said, have a good hike, your way.
